Origin and history

The castle of Montrozier, located in the department of Aveyron in Occitanie region, was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. He served as a residence for the Counts of Rodez before becoming a possession of the Counts of Armagnac, who used it during their stays in the Rouergue. This castle illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a period marked by local conflicts and strategic alliances between noble families.

From the 13th century, the Counts of Rodez chose the nearby castle of Gages as their main residence, but Montrozier retained its importance. In the 15th century, the road Rodrigue de Villandrado stayed there in 1431, reflecting the troubles of the time. In 1487 Louis XI granted the castle to Jean, bastard of Armagnac, before he was erected as a marquisat in 1761. These changes in ownership reflect his political and military role in the region.

The castle was listed as historical monuments in 1976 for its facades, roofs, and remarkable interior elements such as a staircase and carved chimneys. These protections underline its heritage value, mixing medieval and Renaissance heritage. Today, it remains a symbol of the feudal and noble history of the Rouergue, anchored in the landscape of Aveyron.

Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a Historical Monument and its link with the great families of the Southwest. Its architecture and history are key evidence of the political and social dynamics of Occitanie between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
