Origin and history
The Château de l'Age-au-Seigneur, located in the commune of Grand-Bourg (Creuse), is a ruin whose origins date back to the early 12th century. A vaulted cellar, dated from this period, bears witness to its seniority. This architectural vestige is emblematic of the local medieval heritage, although its history remains partially unknown.
In 1990, the castle burned down partially, aggravating its state of degradation. Despite this incident, the structure retains significant elements of its past, such as the vaulted cellar, which offers an overview of its original construction.
In 2017, blogger John, from the abandoned-france.com site, visited the site and prepared an inventory of its conservation. This report has documented the current state of the castle, contributing to its knowledge by the public and lovers of abandoned heritage.
The castle is referenced in specialized books, such as the Dictionary of Castles and Fortifications of the Middle Ages in France by Charles-Laurent Salch (1979). This type of monument illustrates the strategic importance of the fortifications in Limousin, a region marked by conflicts and cultural exchanges in the Middle Ages.
