Origin and history
The former castle of Gamaches is a composite architectural complex located in the commune of Gamaches, in the department of the Somme (Hauts-de-France). It is distinguished by the coexistence of medieval remains and posterior additions, reflecting centuries of evolution. The two round towers, the last traces of the original castle, date from the 12th and 13th centuries, when the local fortifications played a key role in the defense and seigneurial organization of Picardia.
One of the towers was destroyed in 1500, while the other, still standing, underwent major alterations in the 19th century, altering its original appearance. These transformations illustrate the successive adaptations of the site to residential or administrative uses, typical of castles after the end of their military role. The gate, probably erected in the 17th century, and the buildings adjacent to the renovated tower, without a marked architectural style, testify to this disparate evolution.
Partly listed as historical monuments since 1986, the Château de Gamaches retains its heritage value despite its fragmentary state. The protections specifically concern the two towers, stressing their importance as remains of the medieval fortifications of the region. Historical sources, such as the works of Philippe des Forts (1907-1911) or Philippe Seydoux (1979), document its integration into the castral landscape of northern France, without specifying the details of its construction or its owners.
