Origin and history
The Château du Fa, located north of Pons in Charente-Maritime, belonged to the Asnières family, younger branch of the Pons sires. Built in the 14th century, it was partially dismantled in 1829 by the Marquis de la Châtaigneraie to modernize the house, thus removing degraded elements such as windows and frontons.
Today, the castle remains only its oratory, integrated into a contemporary building and known as the Sainte-Marie-du-Fâ chapel. This chapel, partly dating from the 15th century, preserves notable architectural elements: a central column with a carved capital representing biblical scenes (such as the sacrifice of Abraham) and arches with cross-sections of quadripartite warheads. It has been classified as an additional inventory of historic monuments since 1949.
The chapel, of square plan, is covered with arches of warheads resting on a column adorned with a capital of characters. The vault keys represent the four Evangelists. This remodelled vestige testifies to the historical importance of the site and its architectural evolution throughout the centuries.
