Origin and history

The Château de Saint-Paul-d'Oueil is a 16th century Renaissance building located in the southwest of Haute-Garonne, in the heart of the village of Saint-Paul-d'Oueil. It is distinguished by its rectangular house facing north-south, supplemented to the west by a prominent hexagonal staircase turret, pierced by simple sill windows. A pavilion is also on the south side. This castle, private property, illustrates the civil architecture of the modern period in the Pyrenees, adapted to the constraints of the high mountain.

The staircase tower, the only notable vestige of the original castle, has been listed as historical monuments since May 9, 1947. It houses a stone staircase serving the living rooms of the left wing, illuminated by three horizontal shaft windows. The ceilings of the rooms, adorned with exposed ribbed beams and carved motifs (heads of beam), testify to the care given to the interior decoration. This castle is considered a rare example of a seigneurial mountain residence in Occitanie.

According to available sources, the castle is not visiting, although its exterior architecture and turret remain visible from the departmental road 51. Its state of conservation and current use (private residence) limit access to the public. The data of the Merimée database and the Creative Commons licensed photographs (like those of Father Igor) document his appearance, while his Insee code (31508) and his approximate address (18 Hournet, 31110 Saint-Paul-d'Oueil) allow to locate him with an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10).
