Origin and history
The Porte d'Orient de Charroux is an architectural vestige of the 13th century, located in the south of the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was one of the fortified accesses of Charroux, then classified as the "closed cities" of Bourbonnais, i.e. surrounded by defensive walls. Today, this door is integrated into a private house, known as the Prince of Condé, testifying to its role both military and urban in local history.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 9 December 1929, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The East Gate, with its counterpart the Western Gate, represents the last visible elements of the medieval fortifications of Charroux. These remains illustrate the strategic importance of the city at the time, as well as its urban organization typical of the fortified cities of the Middle Ages.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its status as communal property and its precise location at 11 Rue de l'Auditoire. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed, its inscription in the heritage protects this rare testimony of Bourbon's defensive architecture.
