Origin and history
Rametz Castle, located in Saint-Waast in the Northern Department, has its origins in the 14th century, although traces of an earlier 13th century building are mentioned. It was thoroughly reshaped between the 16th and 19th centuries, including major changes in the 18th century. The castle is distinguished by its architecture in orange pink bricks, punctuated with limestone, and rests on a sandstone base. It is surrounded by moat and preserves defensive elements such as cylindrical towers and murderers, remains of its medieval past. Inside, some rooms, such as the Guards Room or the dining room, were renovated in the 19th century, with painted decorations or woodwork characteristic of that time.
The estate extends over a five-hectare park, populated by centuries-old trees, and includes elements classified as historical monuments since 1979, such as facades, roofs, moats and their bridge. Among the remarkable spaces are the Gardes Hall, which was re-dressed in the second half of the 19th century, or the dining room decorated with paintings by J. Léonard (1848). The kitchen, vaulted in a brick cradle, and the office, with woodwork from the early 19th century, also testify to the architectural evolution of the place. Although private property, the castle exceptionally opened its doors during Heritage Days, allowing to discover the dungeon, chapel or gallery.
Rametz Castle thus illustrates a superposition of styles and periods, mixing medieval heritage and modern transformations. Its classification as a historical monument underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for the interior decorations preserved. The moat, towers and wooded park are a representative example of the fortified castles of northern France, adapted to the tastes and needs of the following centuries.
