Origin and history
The Puy-de-Val castle, located in the municipality of Espagnac in Corrèze, is a building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It embodies the defensive and residential architecture typical of this period, marked by the transitions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its registration as a Historic Monument in 1927 and its modification in 2011 testify to its heritage value recognized by the French authorities.
At the time of its construction, the Limousin region (now part of New Aquitaine) was characterized by a rural and seigneurial society. The castles, like that of Puy-de-Val, served both as aristocratic residences and symbols of local power. Their establishment often reflected strategic issues, related to the control of lands and channels of communication in a territory marked by feudal conflicts and then the wars of Religion.
The legal protections applied to the Puy-de-Val castle cover both the main structure and its base, as evidenced by the decrees of 1927 and 2011. These measures aim to preserve the integrity of a built heritage representative of the historical and social dynamics of the Corrèze. The precise address, 4 Puy-De-Val in Espagnac, as well as its Insee code (19075), confirm its territorial anchor in the department of Corrèze, formerly attached to the Limousin region.
