Origin and history
Pouthet Castle, also known as the Chartreuse de Pouthet, is an iconic Bergerac building located in the commune of Eymet, Dordogne. Built in the 18th century, it underwent major architectural changes in the next century, notably after a fire that destroyed one of its wings. This estate, originally dedicated to viticulture, is distinguished by its east-west oriented house, flanked by pavilions and accessible by monumental stairs. A false mâchicoulis tower, added in the 19th century, replaces the lost wing, while a symmetrical turret balances the composition on the eastern side.
The castle is organized around a wooded park, including boxwoods, a cedar alley and a polychrome vegetable garden, reflecting the influence of 19th-century picturesque gardens. The outbuildings, arranged in L relative to the house, and the communes built to the north complete the whole. This estate, representative of the rural residential architecture of the region, reflects the evolution of the Chartreuses in the Dordogne, between agricultural function and seigneurial residence.
Ranked a historical monument on June 23, 2006, the Pouthet Castle illustrates the built heritage of the southwestern Dordogne, marked by winemaking history and architectural transformations linked to 19th century tastes. Its location on the edge of the 933 departmental road, near the bastide d'Eymet, makes it a key element of the local historical landscape.
