Origin and history

The Château des Portes is a medieval building located at Les Portes, about 2 km south of the village of Mainsat, in the department of Creuse (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its origins date back to the 12th century, although major renovations took place in the 19th century, especially for its park. For four centuries this castle belonged to Durat's family, several members of which have distinguished themselves in military careers, reflecting its strategic and social importance in the region.

The castle park was transformed in the 19th century under the impetus of the Marquise de Beaucaire, which gave it a picturesque style, characteristic of the landscape tastes of the period. Since 1974, the castle has belonged to the commune of Mainsat and regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts and entertainment for children, thus integrating into a local cultural dynamic. A notable feature of the site is an artisticly carved tree strain, adding an original touch to its heritage.
