Origin and history

The Château de Pommier, located in Saint-Martin-du-Mont in the department of Ain, dates from the 13th century. It was probably built on the remains of an ancient oppidum. The successive reshuffles, from the 14th to the 18th century, preserved medieval elements such as the dungeon and a vaulted chapel at the crossroads of the 14th century. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution and changes of owners over the centuries.

The first known owner, Guy de Sales, is considered the probable builder of the castle. In 1358 his grandson obtained the infeodation of Saint-Martin-du-Mont by the Count of Savoie. The Sales family retained the estate until 1548, when it passed to the Grillet. Nicolas de Grillet, then his son Charles Maximilien (buried in the local church), are the successive owners. In 1692, Joseph Marie de Moyria, Count of Maillat, bought baronie for 24,000 pounds, triggering a long trial (1695-1699).

In the 18th century, the family of Conzié, including Joachim François Mamert and Louis-Hilaire, took possession of the castle, followed by the Count of Loras. In 1848 Sylvain de La Forest Divonne became the new owner. The castle was also used as a setting in 2011 for the film Confession d'un enfant du siècle, marking its anchor in contemporary culture.
