Origin and history

The Terral Castle is a building built between 1889 and 1909 in the commune of Ouveillan in the department of Aude. It replaces an ancient 18th century farmhouse and is inspired by the architectural styles of the 17th and 18th centuries for its exterior and interior, respectively. The plans were designed by architects Louis Garros and his son Alexandre, while Georges Le Breton designed the gardens. The castle consists of a central body framed by two pavilions, with facades adorned with split chains, larmies on consoles and balconies with stone balusters.

Inside, the original layout was preserved, including three lounges, a dining room, a gallery and a hall with stairwell. To the south, a terrace and stairs lead to a water body in front of the castle. The chapel, completed in 1909, presents a rectangular plan with a nave covered with an openwork dome. The ensemble is completed by former stables, a concierge pavilion, a fence and a gate, all classified as Historic Monument since 29 March 2005.

The site preserves traces of a medieval past: in the 12th and 13th centuries, the territory housed a barn dependent on the Cistercian abbey of Fontfroide, like the nearby barn of Fontcalvy. The 2005 classification protects the mentioned facades, roofs, interior elements, as well as the park, with the exception of the so-called parts of the farmhouse and the old park. Today, the Terral Castle illustrates the eclectic architectural heritage of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Occitanie.
