Origin and history

Le Puy du Fou was born in 1977 on the initiative of Philippe de Villiers, then a senior official and son of Jacques de Villiers, vice-president of the Vendée General Council. Inspired by the ruins of the Château du Puy du Fou, he wrote a poem and designed a show exhilarating local history, Tonight, the Vendée, which became in 1978 La Cinéscénie. This night show, played by volunteers, traces the history of the Vendée through the fate of a peasant family, the Maupillier, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The first performance, on 16 June 1978, attracted 81,000 spectators, far exceeding financial expectations.

In 1989, Philippe de Villiers created the Grand Parc (now Grand Parc in 1998), a 50-hectare leisure park around an 18th-century village. This park offers shows inspired by the history of France, combining erect animals, pyrotechnic effects and architectural reconstructions. From its beginnings, the Puy du Fou is distinguished by its "anti-Disney" approach, which favors a romantic and mythical vision of history, especially of the Vendée War, with royalist figures like Charette. The park gradually spreads with thematic villages (medieval, Renaissance, 19th century) and immersive hotels, forming the Night City from 2007.

Cinéscénie remains the symbolic heart of the project, mobilizing up to 4,000 volunteers (Puyflais) for giant performances combining 2,400 actors, 120 riders and spectacular special effects. The show, often criticized for its partial vision of history (notably by historians such as Jean-Clément Martin or Michel Vovelle), exalts a Catholic and royalist Vendée, united against "external enemies" (Republicans, Vikings, English). Despite these controversies, the Puy du Fou became a popular success, attracting more than 2 million visitors annually in the 2010s.

The park is diversified with a variety of shows, such as The Ball of Ghost Birds (falcony), The Last Panache (Wreath of Vendée), or The Sign of Triumph (Ancient Rome). Each creation is based on collaborations with experts in special effects, pyrotechnics and animal dressing. In 2012, the Puy du Fou received the Thea Classic Award, an international recognition in the theme park industry. The business model is based on a mix of permanent employees, seasonal workers and volunteers, with a turnover of over EUR 100 million before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Puy du Fou exported internationally with projects in Spain (Puy du Fou España, opened in 2021), China, and the United Kingdom, although some projects (such as those in Russia or Crimea) were abandoned due to geopolitical tensions. In France, the park inspires other local initiatives, such as the Rocher Mistral in Provence or historic shows in Normandy. Despite recurrent polemics (animal abuse, working conditions, political instrumentalisation), the Puy du Fou remains a major player in French cultural tourism, combining entertainment and controversial reinterpretation of history.

The identity of the Puy du Fou is inseparable from its founder, Philippe de Villiers, whose political and cultural vision permeates the park. Former minister and figure of the conservative right, he uses the Puy du Fou as a tool of "cultural combat", promoting a historical memory centered on resistance to revolutions and invasions. This ideological dimension, coupled with a dynamic economic model, allowed the park to survive crises (such as the pandemic) and impose itself as an alternative to Disney parks, while at the same time generating debate on the boundary between spectacle, history and propaganda.
