Origin and history

Château de la Roche, located in Gouffern en Auge in the department of Orne, is an 18th-century building built around 1780. It is distinguished by its architecture combining brick and white stone, with a main facade decorated with a triangular tympanum. The castle is located on the site of the former glass factory of the Roche de Nonant, founded in 1690, although its current construction is attributed to the family of Brossard, the gentleman glassmakers.

The park of the castle has retained its original appearance since the end of the eighteenth century, without major transformation. The façades and roofs of the monument have been protected as historical monuments since 1 October 1974. The castle is located at the place known as the Vieille Verrerie, near the church of Saint-Sauveur, in the territory of La Cochère, delegated commune of Gouffern en Auge.

The history of the castle is linked to the glass industry of the region, with possible continuity between the old glass factory and the building of the castle by the Brossard family. This family, involved in glass production, marked the local architecture by this emblematic monument, now classified and preserved.
