Origin and history

The Château de Rosvilliou, located in the commune of Duault in the Côtes-d'Armor, is distinguished by its hybrid architecture combining Renaissance and 17th century. Built according to a symmetrical ordinance, its central pavilion houses a ramp-on-rampe staircase, while elements such as a corbelling brace or asymmetrical cornice betray its successive origins. Although centuries have standardized its appearance, these details make it possible to distinguish the two periods of construction.

The monument finds its origins in the transformation (1605-1610) of a former hunting residence by Charles Maurice Bahezre, lord of Kerfichant and lieutenant general of Carhaix. Born into the powerful Bahezre family, he inherited land in Duault and erected one of the first non-military castles in Brittany. The seigneury passed to the Fleuriot in 1624, then was inhabited by the family of Langle in the 18th century, during which time the southern part was redesigned.

The castle has been protected as historical monuments since 22 January 1927, recognizing its heritage value. His recent history includes a film role: in 2022, he served as a stage for the film Rosalie, where he embodied an orphanage. This contemporary use illustrates the versatility of this monument, a witness to both Breton seigneurial history and current culture.

The building is part of a network of remarkable Breton castles, such as that of Kériolet to Concarneau, with which he shares a presence in audiovisual productions. Its inscription among the historical monuments of the Côtes-d-Armor and its mention in specialized works, such as Manoirs: A history in Brittany (2021), underline its regional importance.
