Origin and history

The castle of Nogarède is a 16th century castle, located in the municipality of Sieuras, in the department of Ariège. Built in Toulouse brick, it is characterized by its stone snout windows, its three round towers and an octagonal tower with thick walls of 1.75 meters at the base. These defensive elements, reinforced by curved vaults and high walls connecting the towers, testify to an architecture designed to resist attacks. A remarkable 1550 gate gives access to a spiral staircase, while a double tower access to the third floor.

The castle, partially modified until the 18th century, belonged to the family of Sers. It has been listed as historic monuments since 1989 for its facades, roofs, its large room with fireplace and the chapel Saint-Laurent. In 2021, he was selected by Stéphane Bern's Heritage Mission for urgent restoration of roofs. A total listing of the castle and its communes was formalized in 2023.

The outbuildings include a Saint Lawrence chapel with a three-cell wall bell tower, housing a painted wooden pulpit and statues of Saint Germaine and Saint Joseph. The site also includes a pig house, a large (15 × 36 m) corn dryer, and the ruins of a windmill, reflecting past agricultural activity. The castle, private property, is not open to the visit.

Architecturally, the castle of Nogarède combines feudal elements with a Renaissance decor, with canned columns and capitals of classical orders (doric, ionic, Corinthian). The large room on the first floor retains a 16th century fireplace and murals, while another room has a 17th century painted ceiling. This mix of styles illustrates the aesthetic and functional changes that occurred between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
