Gate, including the tower that flanks it (Box AB 32): inscription by order of 19 April 1972

Origin and history

La Porte de Tillières-sur-Avre is a medieval monument dating from the 11th century, located in the town of Tillières-sur-Avre, Normandy. This architectural vestige, which includes a gate flanked by a tower, bears witness to the local fortifications of that time. The building has been listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since 19 April 1972, under the cadastral reference AB 32, thus protecting its historical and architectural integrity.

The location of this monument, although documented (rue du Fort and 31 Grande Rue), remains approximate according to available sources, with an accuracy assessed as fair. This geographical uncertainty reflects the challenges of conservation and documentation of medieval sites, often integrated into evolutionary urban tissues. The gate, typical of Norman fortifications, illustrates the defensive role of cities at this time, in a context of feudal tensions and territorial control.

The monument is now listed in the Merimée database, with administrative information associated with Insee code 27643, attached to the department of Eure. Although the sources do not specify its current accessibility (visit, rental, etc.), its status as a Historic Monument makes it a protected heritage element, representative of the Norman medieval heritage.
