Origin and history
The château of Horgues, located in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées, probably existed before 1560. He was the residence of Captain Horgues, Count of Lavedan, known for fighting the Calvinist troops of Jeanne d'Albret. After defending Tarbes, he retired to this castle, which became a symbol of local resistance. The building, of massive appearance, has four distinct facades, some of which were modified over the centuries.
In the 18th century, a south-west tower was added, while the east facade, along with a wooden gallery that was identical in oak, retained its original appearance. The ground-framed windows and the powerful foothills of the south towers testify to its architectural evolution. Inside, Empire-style wallpapers and an original frame remain, illustrating the interior and exterior transformations of the castle.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1977 for its facades, roofs and the living room on the first floor with its wallpapers, the castle of Horgues embodies centuries of history, combining defensive, residential and heritage functions. Its brick scald, square tower and limited openings reflect both its past role and its adaptation to later times.
