Origin and history

The fountain of the Clarisses, located in Besançon in the Doubs department, is a public fountain built in the 18th century. It is located near the entrance to the former artillery school at 4 Megevand Street. Its history began in 1698 with a first fountain backed by the wall of the convent of the Clarisses and rebuilt in 1755 by architect Charles-François Longin. This monument, made of limestone with various hues, is an example of classical architecture, marked by bas-reliefs representing a trident of Neptune and a religious scepter, surrounded by palm trees of patience.

The fountain is a testament to the importance of public water points in cities in the 18th century, when Besançon, a strategic city close to the Swiss border, experienced marked urban and military development. The fountains then served as both water supply for the inhabitants and decorative elements reflecting the city's prestige. Their construction was often linked to convents or religious institutions, as evidenced by the convent of the Clares.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 22 July 1935, the fountain of the Clarisses illustrates the architectural and artistic heritage of Besançon. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location (4 rue Mégevand) make it a key element of the urban landscape, associated with the religious and military history of the city. The bas-reliefs, of classical style, recall the artistic influences of the period, mixing mythological and religious symbols.
