Origin and history

The farm of Aleyrangues, located in Comiac (Sousceyrac-en-Quercy), consists of a house and a barn-stable forming an ancient nucleus, supplemented later by a second barn and a monumental well. The buildings, in granite bellows with cut stone frames, illustrate a rural architecture adapted to agricultural needs. The house, on two levels, has a schist lauze roof and a covered facade to install a stone porch. Inside, a large bread oven, a stencil with stone shelves, and a fireplace carved with rock motifs (XVIII-XIX centuries) testify to domestic life.

The site is attested from the Middle Ages, with a continuous family occupation since the 16th century. The present house, partly dating back to the second half of the 16th century, was modified in 1802 by the mason Jacques Maisonnobe for Jean Bennet, mayor of Comiac (1815-1821). An inscription on the door lintel ("MACON 1802 IEAN BENNET / IACQUES MAISONOBE MAITRE") and a religious decoration ("JESUS CHRIST" with a pattée cross) mark this transformation. The barn-stables, on two levels (stable on the ground floor, barn at the height), were completed in 1867 by a pigeon-pig and in 1883 by a second barn.

The farm reflects the evolution of agricultural and social practices in Quercy, from the Ancien Régime to the 19th century. The hamlet of Alayrangues, mentioned on the Cassini map, was inhabited by families of farmers such as the Bennet, local landowners. The elements protected since 2023 (logis, wells, barn facades) highlight the heritage value of this complex, combining agricultural functionality and architectural heritage. The cantou (traditional route), the ancient latrines, and the chimney stump adorned with balls recall the influences of nearby seigneurial houses, such as the castle of Montal.

The sponsor of the work of 1802, Jean Bennet (1777–?), born from a line attested in Aleyrangues since 1655, embodies family continuity and local social ascent. His great-grandson, Baptiste Bennet, cultivated the estate in the 19th century and added the last outbuildings. The farm, now partially classified as a historical monument, thus illustrates five centuries of Occitan rural history, between medieval traditions and modern adaptations.
