Origin and history

The abbey of the Blessed God was founded on 29 September 1138 by Alberic, disciple of Bernard de Clairvaux, as a Cistercian monastery. The site, typical of the abbeys of the order, includes an abbey church and convent buildings. The whole reflects the ideal of simplicity and autonomy advocated by Cistercians in the 12th century.

Around 1500, under the commende regime, Pierre de La Fin added a fortified bell tower and an arrow above the choir, marking a defensive architectural evolution. These changes respond to protection needs in a context of unrest, as evidenced by the ditches and palissades represented in Guillaume Revel's Armorial d'Auvergne, Forez and Bourbonnais.

In 1612, the abbey, ruined by the wars, became a convent of women under the direction of Françoise de Nerestang. The buildings were restored and a Baroque chapel was added (completed in 1651). The male community is relocated to the Abbey of Mègemont. During the Revolution, the abbey was sold as a national property; Its stones serve as a quarry, but the church, bought by the inhabitants, becomes parishioner.

Daughter of the Abbey of Clairvaux, the Blessed God illustrates the Cistercian influence in Forez. His history is documented by sources such as the History of Forez (1674) of Canon Jean-Marie de La Mure or the works of Abbé Dard (1880). Ranked a historic monument since 1840, it now embodies a major religious and architectural heritage of the Loire.

The abbots and abbesses succeeded each other from the 12th to the 18th century, with figures such as Alberic (founder), Pierre de La Fin (builder of the bell tower), or Françoise de Nerestang (first abbess). The complete list, from the Dictionary of Ecclesiastical History and Geography, covers nearly 700 years of monastic history.

The defensive elements (fossed, palisades) visible on the ancient representations underline the double role of the abbey: place of prayer and protection. These developments, rare for a Cistercian abbey, bear witness to local tensions in the 15th and 16th centuries.
