Origin and history

The Gueldro alignments, located in Plouhinec in Morbihan, are a megalithic ensemble dating from Neolithic times. Composed originally of several rows of menhirs, they still had 8 alignments in 1847, with stones reaching 4-5 meters high. These remains, reported in 1825 by Canon Mahé, bear witness to a monumental organization today fragmentary.

In 1907, two menhirs were broken by carriers, and other stones were moved or reused to widen the road. In 1961, agricultural re-memberment further damaged the site, reducing alignments to 41 remaining stones. Despite these degradations, the site was classified as a historic monument on December 11, 1963 to preserve it.

Recent work has caused further damage to this already highly disturbed site. Today, the 96 menhirs still visible correspond to the remains of one or more alignments, whose state makes any interpretation difficult. The stones, mostly displaced, illustrate the conservation challenges of megalithic monuments in the face of human activities.

Historical descriptions, such as those of Zacharie Le Rouzic or Pierre-Roland Giot, highlight the archaeological importance of the site. The Gueldro alignments, though fragmentary, remain a major testimony of the Breton megalithic heritage, marked by centuries of partial transformation and destruction.
