Pregnant of earth (cf. A 637): registration by order of 27 July 1995
Origin and history
The Kerlavarec compound, located in La Martyre, Finistère, is a historical monument dating from the middle of the Middle Ages. This fortified site, located on a hillside, consists of a dry ditch 4 metres wide and 1.50 to 2 metres deep, surrounding a rise of land. The ensemble forms a roughly oval enclosure, measuring about 38 meters by 30, with an east-west orientation. A passage is set up to the south, and the site is now in very good conservation condition.
The enclosure was classified as a Historical Monument by an order of 27 July 1995, specifically protecting the earth structure (cadastre A 637). Although its GPS location is approximate (accuracy noted 5/10), its official address is listed in La Martyre, Finistère department, Brittany. No information is available on its accessibility to the public or its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation).
Available sources, including Monumentum and internal data, do not mention sponsors or specific historical events related to this site. Its architecture suggests a defensive or symbolic function, typical of Breton medieval enclosures. The site illustrates common earth fortification techniques between the 10th and 15th centuries in this area, where the hills were often used to enhance the protection of habitats or community spaces.
