Origin and history
The former castle of Gamaches, located in the department of the Somme (Hauts-de-France), is a vestige of the 12th and 13th centuries. It consists mainly of two round stone towers, one of which, partially destroyed in 1500, is now in ruins, while the other, profoundly redesigned in the nineteenth century, was preserved. These towers, symbols of medieval defensive architecture, are the only remaining elements of the original castle, surrounded later by disparate constructions without marked architectural style.
The castle gate, probably erected in the seventeenth century, adds a stylistic touch after the whole. The adjacent buildings, joined to the renovated tower in the 19th century, reflect functional additions without aesthetic consistency with the original structure. The ensemble was partially protected as historical monuments in 1986, with an inscription specifically covering the two towers (cadastre AK 217a and 217b), highlighting their heritage value despite their fragmentary state.
Historical sources mention bibliographical references, such as the works of Philippe des Forts and R. de Guyencourt (1907-1911) or those of Philippe Seydoux (1979), which place the castle in the wider context of medieval fortresses in northern France. No specific information is available on sponsors or significant events related to this site, except the partial destruction of a tower in 1500 and subsequent transformations. The exact location, west of Amiens, is confirmed by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, with an approximate address to 5 Impasse Georges Roger.
