Origin and history

Randan Castle, acquired in 1821 by Adélaïde d'Orléans and his brother Louis-Philippe (future king of the French), was profoundly redesigned to become a second royal residence. The architect Pierre Fontaine directs the works, expanding the existing 16th century building and creating a landscaped park combining French, English and Italian styles. The estate then extends over 110 hectares, including an orangery, monumental communes and a neo-classical chapel completed in 1831.

Princess Adelaide, who died without a direct heir in 1847, left Randan to his nephew Antoine d'Orléans, Duke of Montpensier. The estate had its peak under Marie-Isabelle d'Orléans-Montpensier, which installed electricity (1909) and running water (1912). During the First World War, the castle was transformed into a military hospital by the Countess of Paris and her daughter Amélie, the dethroned queen of Portugal.

A fire ravaged the castle in July 1925, leaving nothing but ruins. The collections saved are scattered, some transported to Spain by the Duchess of Montpensier. In the 1940s, the park hosted the gatherings of the Companions of France, a youth movement of the Vichy regime. After 1999, the state and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region acquired the estate and its collections, committing a vast restoration.

The park, which was listed as a historic monument in 2001, maintains its factories (obelisk, coolers, greenhouses inspired by Versailles) and its original hydraulic system. The chapel, with its royal cenotaphs and its intact neo-classical decor, as well as the 19th century vaulted kitchens, testify to the fascist of the residence. The communes now house a unique cynegetic collection, gathered by Ferdinand d'Orléans.

The vestiges of furniture, including a service of Sèvres commissioned by Louis-Philippe (1838-1842) and hunting trophies naturalized by Rowland Ward, were preserved thanks to their classification in 1991. The estate, which has been open to the public since the 2000s, offers thematic visits to the history of the Orléans and their artistic heritage, as well as temporary exhibitions in the former house of the director.
