Origin and history
The old gate of the city of Lezoux is a historical monument located in Puy-de-Dôme, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It consists of a medieval poterne transformed in the 16th century and a belfry of the same period, modified in the 18th century by the addition of a campanile. This work, perhaps linked to the enclosure of an old castle, illustrates the local architectural evolution.
The door, classified as a Historic Monument since 1982, is distinguished by its characteristic style of auvergnate architecture. Its belfry and its poterne testify to successive adaptations, reflecting the defensive and then urban needs of the city. Today it is a communal property and remains an emblematic vestige of local heritage.
The location of the gate, rue de l'Horloge, and its state of conservation underline its historical importance. Although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (note 5/10), it remains a point of interest in understanding the town planning and fortifications of Lezoux throughout the centuries.
