Arceau with window of the 15s dit Le Pontail : inscription by decree of 21 October 1932
Origin and history
The 15th century window arch, known as Le Pontail, is a monument located in the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the Alpes-Maritimes. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 21 October 1932, represents an example of civil architecture of the late Middle Ages. Its official inscription underlines its heritage importance and its role in the local historic landscape.
The location of the arch at 82 Rue Grande places this vestige in the heart of the village, a place marked by a rich history and a typical urbanization of the Provencal villages. The period of construction, the 15th century, corresponds to a period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where fortified villages like Saint-Paul-de-Vence played a key role in regional exchanges and the protection of populations.
In the 15th century, the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur was characterized by a mainly agricultural and artisanal economy, with villages organized around strongholds and ramparts. Monuments such as Le Pontail could serve as points of passage, defense or symbols of local power. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and construction techniques of the era.
