Autel des Rogations or Oratory or Rest of Sauzet : inscription by order of 10 December 1925

Origin and history

The altar of the Sauzet Rogations, located in Carnac-Rouffiac in Occitanie, is a small medieval religious building. It consists of a stone altar embedded in a wall, surmounted by a cross carved in a slab. Two protruding backs support a low arc protecting the whole, while the roof, in hollow tiles, rests directly on the masonry. This type of monument, often called oratory or repose, was generally associated with local religious processesions, including those of the Rogations, which marked moments of prayer for the protection of cultures and communities.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of December 10, 1925, this altar illustrates the modest and functional religious architecture of the Middle Ages in the Occitan countryside. Oratories like Sauzet played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the villages, serving as gathering points for ceremonies and collective prayers. Their location, often on the edge of roads or fields, reflected their connection to agricultural practices and land blessing rituals. The simplicity of their construction, with local materials such as stone and tiles, reflects the resources and know-how available in rural communities of the time.

The accuracy of the current altar location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), based on available data. Its approximate address, "5088 Camp de Marc, 46140 Carnac-Rouffiac", suggests a rural location, consistent with its original vocation. Although little documented beyond its architectural description and heritage protection, this monument offers a material testimony of medieval religious traditions still visible in the Occitan landscape. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified in the sources, but its registration as Historic Monuments guarantees an official recognition of its historical and cultural value.
