Origin and history

Valmante Castle, originally called Redon Castle, is a bastide built in 1855 for Joseph Grandval in the 9th arrondissement of Marseille. This monument illustrates the easy 19th century residential architecture, typical of the Marseille area, where industrialists and notables erected sumptuous houses far from urban agitation.

In 1893, the property was acquired by Louis Mante, a wealthy industrialist and natural son of Victor Régis, as well as his wife Juliette Mante-Rostand. The castle then takes the name of Valmante, reflecting this change of owners. This type of transaction was common among the Marseille elites of the time, where the bastides served as both a secondary residence and a symbol of social status.

Valmante Castle was listed as a historical monument on 15 November 2022, before being classified by order of 8 January 2025. This protection covers the entire bastide, including its exterior fittings (terraces, stairs) and part of the garden. The painter-decorator Pierre-Victor Galland contributed to his beautification, stressing the importance attached to aesthetics in these bourgeois houses.

Located on the 143rd crossing of the Gouffonne, the castle is part of the Bouches-du-Rhône landscape, a department marked by a varied architectural heritage, mixing Mediterranean and industrial influences. Its recent ranking reflects the desire to preserve this emblematic heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
