Calvary, in the cemetery (cad. A 4): classification by order of 14 August 1962 - The old porch of the abbey church, currently in the cemetery (Box A 4): see notice of the former abbey (ref. PA00089906)

Origin and history

The Daoulas cemetery, located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany, houses a granite calvary dated from the second half of the sixteenth century. This monument, marked by the date of 1590, illustrates an architectural transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its base, on the other hand, seems to date from the 18th century, revealing subsequent modifications to its initial construction.

The Calvary rests on an octagonal cask and presents an original composition: two consoles support the statues of the Virgin and Saint John, while the Cross occupies the centre. However, this arrangement is not considered to be original, suggesting changes over the centuries. The monument has been classified as a Historical Monument since 1962, protecting its calvary and the old porch of the neighboring abbey, now integrated into the cemetery.

The cemetery, owned by the municipality, is located on Rue de l'Eglise in Daoulas, Finistère. Although its location is approximately identified, the accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10). This site reflects the importance of Breton Calvary in the religious and artistic heritage of the region, often linked to abbatial or parish ensembles.

At the time of its construction in the 16th century, Brittany was marked by intense religious and artistic activity, with strong influence from local sponsors, often lords or monastic communities. Calvary then served as a support for popular devotion, while affirming the prestige of parishes or abbeys. Their hybrid style, like that of Daoulas, bears witness to the cultural exchanges between local artisans and European Renaissance artistic currents.
