Origin and history
The convent of the Visitation of Sisteron is a 17th century religious building, located in the municipality of Sisteron, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. This monument, typical of the Conventural architecture of the time, was inscribed as a historical monument in 1984, thus recognizing its heritage and architectural value.
The convent consists of a chapel, convent buildings, cellars and a partially preserved cloister. Protected elements include facades, roofs, and five remaining arcades on the south side. Owned by the municipality, this place bears witness to the religious and social history of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
The precise location of the convent is indicated as the rue de la Mission or rue des Saintes Married in Sisteron. Although the sources mention poor geographical accuracy, its official address is referenced in the Merimée database. This monument illustrates the role of convents in the spiritual and community life of Provencal cities in the seventeenth century.
