Gate of Blaye: inscription by decree of 3 November 1925
Origin and history
The Blaye Gate, located in Bourg en Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is one of the few remains of the medieval ramparts of the city. Built in the late 15th century, it defended access to the road leading to Blaye. Its architecture includes a lintel decorated with a brace and a square room on the ground floor of a round tower. Today, only part of the structure remains, the other side having disappeared during the enlargement of modern roads.
This door was part of a wider defensive system, of which there are only two ruins at the ends of Bourg: the Blaye gate and the Port gate, which dominates the Gironde docks. Blaye's gate, although partially destroyed, preserves architectural elements characteristic of the late Middle Ages, such as its carved decoration. It was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of November 3, 1925, recognizing its heritage value.
Owned by the commune, the Blaye Gate bears witness to the urban and military history of Bourg, a town once surrounded by ramparts to protect itself from external threats. Its present state reflects the transformations experienced over the centuries, in particular the adaptations related to the evolution of the channels of communication. Despite the alterations, it remains an important historical marker for the region.
