Origin and history
The German blockhouse of La Chavatte, erected in 1915 by German troops, is a concrete vestige of the position war that marked the front of the Somme during World War I. Built of reinforced concrete, it consists of two distinct parts: a two-storey house with a two-sided roof, and a square wing with a rounded roof. The facades, partially covered with red bricks, and the paved floor recall the military construction techniques of the time.
This monument illustrates the German defensive strategy during the war of wear and tear, where each position was reinforced to resist allied assaults. Its functional architecture, with integrated view guets, reflects the adaptation of infrastructures to tactical needs. Filed entirely as a Historical Monument in 2012, it remains one of the few intact testimonies of this conflict in the Hauts-de-France.
The location of the blockhouse in La Chavatte in the Somme department makes it a key element of the regional memorial heritage. Its state of conservation, considered satisfactory (note 8/10 for location accuracy), allows us to study the fortification techniques used during the Great War. The building, now protected, offers an overview of the living conditions and strategic issues that marked the territory between 1914 and 1918.
