Origin and history
Verzy's blockhouse shelter is a military structure built during World War I in the Marne department. With the stabilization of the front after the Battle of the Marne in 1914, Mount Sinai, the strategic observation point of the Reims plain, became a key position. To protect the Verzy station, served by the Railways of the Banlieue de Reims, this concrete shelter was built just 10 metres from the railway installations.
The shelter was classified as historical monuments by decree of 25 January 1922, recognizing its importance in the defensive history of the region. Today, it is close to the old station, now decommissioned and transformed into a home, while the shelter itself is abandoned.
Located at La Garenne, Verzy, this book illustrates the military architecture of the time, designed to resist attacks and protect strategic infrastructure. Its present state reflects the decline of the remnants of the Great War, often left unmaintained after their decommissioning.
