Origin and history

The château farm in Saint-Moeurs is a 17th-century agricultural building located in Villefranche-d'Allier, in the Allier department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). It is about 3 km west of the village, on the former parish of Neuville. This monument illustrates the transition between medieval buildings and modern farms, with its four bodies of buildings organized around a square courtyard, supplemented by wings of communes delimiting a forecourt.

The building was built on the site of a medieval building, showing an old occupation of the site. Its architecture combines defensive elements, such as the side towers and the entrance pavilion, with agricultural functions. The castle farm was listed as historic monuments on 16 June 1978, protecting its facades and roofs. This ranking underlines its heritage importance in Bourbonnais.

In the 17th century, castle farms were major economic centres in the French countryside. They served both as residences for landowners and as places of agricultural production, reflecting the social and economic organization of the time. In the Allier, these ensembles played a key role in the management of local lands and resources, often linked to the seigneurial history of the region.
