Origin and history

The bridge over the Dourbie, also known as the Prade Bridge, is a medieval building located in Nant, in the department of Aveyron (Occitanie). Built in the 15th century, it is distinguished by its two arches in the middle of the hanger, whose openings of 23,10 meters are the largest of the Rouergue. The central battery, reinforced by triangular fore-beeks and rear-beeks, demonstrates a robust architecture adapted to the hydraulic constraints of the Dourbie.

This bridge is made of carved limestone masonry, with a horizontal apron in its center, lowering towards the ends on uneven slopes. A wrought iron cross, sealed in a stone edicle on the upstream beak, adds a symbolic dimension to the work. Its inscription as historic monuments in 1944 underscores its heritage value.

Historical sources, such as those of Marcel Prade or Jean Mesqui, confirm its importance in the medieval road network of Rouergue. Although some references suggest an origin in the 14th century, the majority of documents agree on a construction in the 15th century. The bridge remains today a remarkable testimony of civil engineering of that time.
