Calvary in 17th century white marble: inscription by decree of 19 May 1925

Origin and history

The White Cross Calvary of Mauléon-Licharre is a 17th century historical monument. It consists of a canned column in white marble, topped by a more recent Latin cross. The column rests on a cubic base (de) with the arms of France and Navarre, itself placed on a quadrangular pyramid with four steps. This monument, located on Rue de la Navarre, embodies the funerary and religious art of the modern era in Soule, a border region between France and Spain.

Filed by order of 19 May 1925, the Calvary belongs to the commune of Mauléon-Licharre. Its architecture combines strong symbolic elements: white marble evokes purity, while the arms of France and Navarre recall the complex political history of this region, marked by its successive membership in the kingdoms of Navarre and then in the crown of France. The Latin cross, later added, emphasizes his Christian vocation.

The location of the monument, close to Arnaud de Maytie Street, and its conservation status were assessed on average accuracy (level 5/10). Although communal property, information on its accessibility to the public (visits, events) is not specified in available sources. Its sober style and noble materials make it a remarkable testimony to Basque sacred art of the seventeenth century.
