Origin and history
The aqueduct-siphon de la Joncasse, located in the commune of Deyme in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), is a hydraulic structure designed to allow the passage of the Rosiers and Joncasse streams under the Canal du Midi. Built between 1734 and 1735, it illustrates the technical ingenuity of the time, with the pioneering use of hydraulic lime, an innovative material for the time.
The aqueduct was realized by the province according to the plans of engineer Jean de Clapiès. This project is part of a rivalry between the engineers of the King and those of the provinces for the control of public works, leading to an achievement of exceptional quality. The work, although partially degraded today, retains its original masonry.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by decree of 24 April 1998, the aqueduct of the Joncasse bears witness to the strategic importance of the Canal du Midi and the technical challenges to be overcome for its construction. Its architecture and materials make it an emblematic example of the 18th century hydraulic heritage in France.
