Origin and history

The Castanet lock is a double lock of the Canal du Midi, located in the commune of Castanet-Tolosan, in the Haute-Garonne. Built around 1670, it marks the departure from Toulouse to Sète and is distinguished by its elliptical basin, a first on this route. Originally composed of two chambers, only one remains in operation today. It has been listed as a historical monument since 1998, with its early 19th century lock house, whose basement housed a stable.

The site was modified in 1978 during extension work, partially altering its original condition. The lock, located 15.7 km from Toulouse (Ponts-Jumeaux), is adjacent to Vic's lock in the east and Bayard lock in the west. Its altitude is 148 metres, and it is part of a heritage complex including the Castanet waterworks and the Green Way of the Canal du Midi.

The lockhouse, on the right bank, and the remains of an old mill on the other bank testify to the historic activity of the site. The whole, including the lock and its surroundings, has been protected since 1998 by a listing order for historic monuments. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its importance in the hydraulic and heritage network of the Occitanie region.
