Le Fer de Mulet's siphon spreader on the canal, placed l'Ale (cad. non cadastre, domaine fluvial): inscription by decree of 27 October 1997
Origin and history
Le épancier du Fer de Mulet is an element of the Canal du Midi, located in the town of Capestang. Built in the second half of the 17th century, this hydraulic structure testifies to the water regulation techniques developed during the creation of the canal, a major project of the modern era to connect the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. In the seventeenth century, the region now known as Occitanie was marked by a rural economy and developing trade.
Infrastructures such as the Canal du Midi played a key role in the transport of goods, facilitating exchanges between territories and stimulating local activities. These works, often imposing, also reflected the political and economic ambitions of the Kingdom of France.
