Origin and history
The Lock of the Sanglier is a double lock of the Canal du Midi, built around 1670 but whose architectural elements today date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Located 33.3 km from Toulouse, on the town of Ayguesvives in Haute-Garonne, it is part of a picturesque complex including a bridge of the early 19th century and an lock house dated 1752. Its altitude is 166 metres, and it is framed by the locks of Negra (east) and Aygues-Vives (west).
The lock, rising in the west-east direction, was designed as part of the hydraulic network of the Canal du Midi, a major work by Pierre-Paul Riquet. The architectural complex, including the bridge and the guard house, was listed as historical monuments by order of 24 April 1998. This classification recognizes its heritage value and remarkable conservation status, almost intact since its construction.
The Sanglier Lock illustrates the hydraulic engineering of the 17th to 19th centuries, when the Canal du Midi played a key role in river transport and economic development in the region. Its 19th-century bridge, launched between the two basins, and its 1752 lock house testify to the technical and architectural developments of the time. Today, it is part of a preserved landscape, frequented for its heritage and associated green path.
