Origin and history
The fortified town gate of Remoulins, classified as Historic Monument, dates back to the Middle Ages and was a key element of the city's ramparts. In 1356 repairs were undertaken on these ramparts, including the addition of machicolis, a defensive element characteristic of medieval military architecture. This gate, six meters high and surmounted by a tower, is now partly wrapped by adjacent buildings, but retains almost all its original mâchicoulis.
In 1590, the ramparts of Remoulins were largely dismantled, with the exception of two towers and this gate, which remains as evidence of the original fortified enclosure. Although part of its coronation has disappeared, the structure remains connected to the posterior buildings by two vaulted passages overlooking the street. Its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 6 December 1949 underlines its heritage importance.
The gate is located at 6 Place du Portail, in the centre of Remoulins, and belongs jointly to the municipality and to private owners. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), makes it a point of historical interest accessible in the department of Gard, in Occitanie region. Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its past defensive role and partial conservation status.
