Origin and history

The fort house of the farm of Challanges is a monument located in Beaune, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This type of construction, typical of rural areas, often served both as a residence and a place of protection for local populations. Fortified houses were generally built by wealthy lords or families to ensure their security in a context of social or military tensions.

In the Beaune region, as in a large part of Burgundy, the fortified houses were integrated into agricultural or wine farms. They played a central role in the economic and social organization of the countryside, serving as a gathering point for agricultural activities and as a refuge if necessary. Their architecture often reflects the defensive needs and resources available at the time of their construction.
