Crossing on the rue des Grands-Forts (with the badges marking the entrance of the city) (Case AS 135, 211, 214): inscription by order of 10 February 1983
Origin and history
Château Vieux de Nyons is an emblematic monument to the city of Nyons, located in the Drôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it embodies a pivotal period of the Middle Ages, marked by defensive and strategic issues. This castle, whose history is partially documented, retains significant architectural elements, such as a vaulted passage adorned with shields, symbolizing the historic entrance of the city.
At that time, Nyons, like many cities in the region, was a place of passage and exchange, protected by fortifications to prevent frequent conflicts. The castles and ramparts played a central role in the social and military organization, serving both as a refuge for the population and as a symbol of local power. The Château Vieux, although partially preserved, illustrates this defensive and identity function, typical of the small medieval towns of south-eastern France.
Its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1983, especially for its vaulted passage, underlines its heritage importance.
