Origin and history
The Château de Rochefort-sur-Brévon stands on a rocky spur west of the village, separated from it by a Brévon loop. Its access is via a track from RD 16, to the right of the west exit of Rochefort. This site houses two separate castles, separated by an elbow of the river, one of which was built at the end of the 19th century.
The primitive castle, attested as early as 1235, was located east of the present, on a spur overlooking the church and pond. Destroyed by fire in 1730, it was replaced by a two-storey house around 1820. In 1888, the Count of Broissia entrusted the Parisian architect Sanson with the construction of a new neo-Renaissance residence on a nearby rocky ridge. Work continued in 1896 with the addition of stables, a terraced garden, an orangery and a park.
The castle, still privately owned, has been partially listed as historical monuments since 1982. This protection concerns its facades, roofs, as well as remarkable interior elements: the large staircase with its vestibule, the fireplaces of the living rooms and the dining room with its decor. Although not open to the public, it bears witness to the aristocratic architecture of the late 19th century in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
The former castle, whose remains are located nearby, is distinct from this 19th century construction. It is mentioned under the name of Château-fort de Rochefort-sur-Brévon and is the subject of a separate notice. The current site, with its park and outbuildings, illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences to recreational residences, while maintaining a strategic settlement inherited from the Middle Ages.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, specify that the present castle bears the date of 1888 on its façade. His architect, Sanson, was identified as a masterpiece, while the Count of Broissia was the sponsor. The exact location is listed under address 3 Impasse du Lavoir, 21510 Rochefort-sur-Brévon, in the Côte-d'Or department.
This monument is part of a historical landscape marked by the Châtillonnais, a region rich in medieval heritage and castles. Its inscription among the historic monuments of Côte-d'Or highlights its architectural interest and its anchoring in local history, although its access remains reserved for its owners.
