Origin and history
The Château d'Oigny-en-Valois is a mansion built between 1498 and 1515 in the architectural style Louis XII, typical of the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Located in Oigny-en-Valois, near Villers-Cotterêts in Aisne, it illustrates the influence of artistic innovations of this period, mixing medieval tradition and new elegance. Its brick and stone architecture and its two polygonal towers make it a remarkable example of the seigneurial residences of the early 16th century.
Ranked a historic monument since February 8, 1928, the castle underwent alterations in the 19th century, especially on its commons, without altering its original features. These changes demonstrate a desire for modernization while preserving heritage, a common practice for old buildings at that time. The site also includes a pleasant garden, inscribed in the pre-inventory of remarkable gardens, with elements such as a pond, a greenhouse and a vegetable garden.
The castle garden, surrounded by a fence, reflects the importance attached to green spaces in Renaissance aristocratic residences. These gardens, often designed for enjoyment and production, played both an aesthetic and a utility role. Their registration in the pre-inventory underscores their heritage value, complementing that of the mansion itself.
