Origin and history

The Château des Bassieux is located on the hillside, west of the village of Anse, in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 18th century, it adopts a quadrilateral shape, with a ground floor and a floor, flanked by two round towers once crenellated. The estate, a private property not open to the public, was restored in the 19th century and retains architectural traces of its defensive past.

The history of the castle dates back to 1193, when the knight Guichard de Marzé obtained the fief of the Bassieux of the Church of Lyon. The coat of arms of the Marze family, fascinated by hermines and six-piece Gules, bear witness to this medieval origin. In the 18th century, the estate belonged to Perrichon de Châtillon, before being acquired later by the Sain family, today dedicated to viticulture with Jules Marie Joseph Antoine Sain.

Historical sources mention the castle in works such as the Dictionnaire de la Noblesse (1775) by La Chesnaye Desbois or Châteaux and bourgeois houses in the Rhône (1980) by C. Pelletier. These references highlight its anchoring in the local heritage, between noble heritage and contemporary wine-growing. The site, though private, illustrates the architectural and social evolution of the Rhônalpin estates since the Middle Ages.
