Origin and history

The Château de l'Aubépin, located in the commune of Fourneaux (Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a building dating back to the second half of the 15th century. Its construction continued and changed over the centuries, with major interventions in the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These successive periods have shaped its architecture, mixing medieval elements with more recent additions, reflecting the changing styles and needs of its occupants.

The castle has been listed and classified as Historic Monuments since the end of the 20th century. A first decree of 16 November 1989 protects part of the castle (with the exception of areas already classified) and the pavilion of Sainte-Agathe. A second decree, dated February 26, 1991, classifies the facades, the roofs, the entrance pavilion, the inner courtyard with its gallery, the large room on the ground floor and its imposing fireplace, the park (including the former vegetable garden), and even a tennis court. These protections highlight the exceptional heritage value of the site, both for its building and for its landscape approaches.

The available sources, including the Monumentum database and the Mérimée data, precisely locate the castle at the following address: 622 A Chemin de l'Aubépin, 42470 Furnaces. The accuracy of this location is estimated as passable (note 5/10), suggesting an approximation in GPS coordinates or domain boundaries. The castle also seems associated with contemporary uses, such as visits, room rentals or guest rooms, although this information is not detailed in the sources consulted.

The Loire department (42), where Fourneaux is located, is marked by a rich architectural heritage, often linked to the industrial history of the region (near Saint-Étienne) and its rural past. Castles like Aubépin testify to the importance of seigneurial residences, then bourgeois, in the territorial and social organization since the Middle Ages. Their preservation allows today to trace the economic and cultural developments of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
