Origin and history
The Château de la Cour in Vezot is a medieval monument located in the municipality of Vezot, Sarthe (Land of the Loire). This site, classified and inscribed in the Historical Monuments, retains architectural elements typical of this period, such as enclosure walls, a tower, a barn and an old gate. These remains illustrate the strategic and defensive importance of castles in the Middle Ages in this region.
The official protections of the castle of the Court date from the end of the twentieth century. The enclosure walls were inscribed by order of 28 November 1988, while other remains, including the enclosure tower and the barn, were classified on 7 February 1994. These conservation measures highlight the heritage value of the site, although its precise location remains approximate (level 7/10 depending on the sources).
Like many medieval castles, the Vezot castle was to play a central role in the local organization, serving both as a place of power, as a protection for the inhabitants and as a symbol of seigneurial authority. The Sarthe, integrated into the estate of the Counts of Maine and then the Plantagenets, was an area of passage and conflict, where these fortifications were essential to control the territory and the commercial routes.
