Origin and history
The Château de la Maison-Neuve, located in Montournais in Vendée (Pays de la Loire), has its origins in the second half of the 15th century. This monument illustrates the fortified residential architecture of the late Middle Ages, with subsequent transformations reflecting the stylistic evolutions and the needs of its occupants. Its history is marked by phases of construction and enlargement, especially in the 16th century for the commons, then by restorations and decorative additions in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The initial construction of the castle thus dates back to the 15th century, when the local lords erected houses combining defensive and residential functions. In the next century, the commons were either built or enlarged, indicating an expansion of domestic or agricultural activities related to the estate. The 17th century saw the restoration of the chapel and salon, while the 18th century brought decorative woodwork, reflecting a growing concern for comfort and aesthetics.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 24 February 1994, the castle of the Neuve House enjoys protection including all buildings, the courtyard with its well, as well as the castral mot. These protected elements underline the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and for its topographical layout. The location of the castle, specified as "a priori satisfactory" (note 8/10), makes it possible to envisage a visit or a thorough study of this witness of medieval and modern times.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm the address of the castle to 4 La Maison Neuve, 85700 Montournais, in the Vendée department ( Pays de la Loire region). Although the practical information on the visits or services offered (rental, guest rooms) is not detailed in the data, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a site of interest for local and regional history.
